One of the most important things is to have a good interviewing system in place where the right questions are being asked to gauge the character and capability of the candidate. From my experience in hiring employees, the biggest thing I always looked out for was always personality, not skill. This is because character is something you are born with and shaped by your environment and is hard to change, whereas skills are taught more easily to others. Also, ask behavioral questions such as: “Tell me about a time when… What was the situation… What did you do… What was the result?” These are more appropriate indicators of the person’s character. Lastly, making sure that the candidate’s long term goals match the position and the company’s vision as they are also very important for the longevity of the business.
